Nottingham Forest Showcase Game

Volenti Academy’s growing reputation was once again demonstrated on Tuesday afternoon when former European Cup winners, Nottingham Forest, invited our Football and Education team to their training ground to play against their Academy.

After a strong start to this season’s National Football Youth League (NYFL), the opportunity for the Volenti boys to match themselves against one of England’s top performing academies was invaluable. Initially setting up in 4-4-2 diamond formation, the Volenti team had to quickly adapt to Forest’s pace and power, however they managed to hit Forest well on the counter-attack and created a number of chances with the game finishing as a 3-3 draw, including two sensational strikes from the very impressive Kwame Poku.

Head coach Bobby Bowry commented after the match:

‘I was really happy with how the boys applied themselves. It was obviously a step up in level for them, however they stuck to our game plan, got the ball down and played some lovely football all across the pitch. If I had one criticism of the performance, it would probably be the way we defended, as we made some silly mistakes and at this level, you get punished’
