NFYL – Reserve League Champions 2019-20

Another very successful season for our B Team who won the NFYL Reserve league on the basis of a points per game average.

The campaign started with 2 home wins before consecutive defeats against Reading and Portsmouth IOW. Following this inconsistent start, we then hit some great form which saw us pick up 31 points from our next 11 games before the Coronavirus ended our season slightly early. We had 35 different players make B team appearances throughout this campaign. Rushaar Samuel topped our scoring charts with 14 goals closely followed by Olu Lawal on 13. Chris Salako made the most appearances starting 14 times out of a possible 15, captaining the squad on a regular basis and scoring the most important goal of the league season with a last gasp winner against close rivals JMA Reading.

Academy Manager Charlie MacDonald reflects on the season.

“It’s been a pleasure to see our B Squad retain the NFYL Reserve League Title, churning out results and performances week in week out. Although winning it again is a superb feat, what impressed me the most was seeing the attitude, desire and work ethic from every member of the squad who was called upon. Everyone aspires to be an A team player but the reality is that competition for places is fierce and that’s why our programme is the best around. No matter whether you drop down from the top squad to play minutes or you get pushed up from our SCL group because you’ve performed well, every player has applied himself in the correct manner. Quite simply, the boys know that there is no room for complacency. This is why we’ve been crowned champions in both leagues. Our job now becomes harder; we are the team to beat and I have no doubt that all the boys will thrive even more on this.”
